In the midst of the announcement of his retirement from Argentina national team, a statue of Lionel Messi has been unveiled in Buenos Aires.
Messi shocked the whole of Argentina and the world when he announced his retirement from international duties following their loss in the final of the Copa America Centenario on Sunday, June 26.

For the third successive year, Argentina came up short in a final of a major tournament, following losses in the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Copa deciders.
The Barcelona star admitted after the game that Sunday's final at MetLife Stadium was set to be his last in an Argentina shirt.

"The decision is already made. That's it," Messi said.
Despite these set-backs, his statue was on Tuesday, June 28 unveiled in Buenos Aires with much fan fair.
Buenos Aires mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta was at the unveiling along with other football loving Argentine fans.

The whole of Argentina led by President Mauricio Macri has been supportive of the Barcelona striker in a bid to make him reconsider his retirement.
"I spoke with him to congratulate him and tell him he had done a great championship," Macri told reporters.
"I don't understand. The truth is that it's a joy, a gift from God, to have the best player in the world in a country like ours.

"Messi is the biggest thing we have in Argentina, so you have to take care of him."
Football personalities all over the world has also called on the 29-year-old to take back his announcement and continue playing for Argentina.
Messi returned to Argentina on Monday, June 27 but is yet to publicly comment on his announcement.
